Water Purification questions answered

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about water purification, water quality in South Africa, and how Prima works. If your question is not here, we are happy to help directly.

Water quality and treatment

The fundamentals of how South African drinking water is treated and measured, and what that means for your home or business.

Is South African tap water safe to drink?
Urban tap water is treated and safe for consumption and cooking. Rural water or areas experiencing municipal infrastructure strain may pose risks, prompting many to use boreholes or purification systems.
What standards govern South African drinking water?
Water quality is measured against the South African National Standard (SANS 241), which outlines the minimum physical, chemical, and biological requirements for safe human consumption.
What is the difference between municipal and borehole water treatment?
Municipal water is pre-treated by bulk suppliers like Rand Water but may pick up pipeline sediment or chlorine. Borehole water varies greatly by location and often requires individual testing to manage variable mineral and bacteria levels.
How often should home filters be maintained?
Sediment pre-filters require inspection and replacement every 3 to 6 months. Activated carbon filters should be replaced every 6 to 12 months, and UV lamps need annual replacement to stay effective.

About Prima and our services

Practical answers about what we offer, where we work, and the warranty and guarantee that stand behind our installations.

What services does Prima offer?
Prima offers residential water purification, industrial water purification, under-counter reverse osmosis systems, water backup solutions, and wastewater treatment. We assess your water on site and recommend the system that matches your supply and usage.
What areas does Prima serve?
We are based in Moreletapark, Pretoria, and serve Gauteng within a 50km radius of our base. This includes Pretoria, Johannesburg, Hammanskraal, and Dinokeng. If you are unsure whether your address falls within range, contact us with your location and we will confirm.
